✨ Christmas Cards Still Matter… ✨

As you can probably tell, I am an unabashed champion of traditions and the thoughtful ways of yesteryear. There is something deeply comforting—almost grounding—about slowing down long enough to do something with intention.

I find true joy in the effort behind meaningful gestures, and I like to believe that by keeping certain traditions alive, we add a bit of warmth to a world that often rushes right past them.

✉️ A Simple Tradition Worth Defending

Sending Christmas cards is one of those simple pleasures quietly fading away, often dismissed with the usual excuses:

Too much effort. Too busy. Too expensive. No one does this anymore…

I stand firmly in defense of this age-old tradition. Few things allow us to touch the lives of relatives, friends, acquaintances—and even ourselves—quite like taking the time to write a heartfelt note.

📬 More Than Just Mail

There is a special kind of joy in opening the mailbox and finding something other than a bill or a marketing flyer. Holding a card, reading kind words, and feeling a “hug in paper form” is not something we should allow to become extinct.

Humans experience so much in a lifetime, and if we’re lucky enough to have around 75 Christmases—considering the first few and last few may blur—receiving a warm holiday hello surely beats a Visa bill every single time.

❤️ Staying Connected Matters

I’ve always believed it’s a gift to receive updates on the joys and sorrows of people we care about. A note sharing illness gives me the chance to pray and wish someone well. A card celebrating milestones or family accomplishments gives me the opportunity to smile and celebrate alongside them.

Staying connected—especially during the holidays—matters more than we realize.

☕ A Card From the Heart

Choosing a Christmas card from your heart is the key. Over the years, I’ve searched endlessly for tea-themed holiday cards (they are becoming heartbreakingly rare). When I can’t find one—or make one myself—I always include a holiday tea bag.

My hope is simple: that each recipient takes a quiet moment to pause, sip, and breathe during the season of peace.

🎄 A Little Holiday Tradition

A fun story: a dear college friend—who loves Christmas just as much as I do—started a friendly contest decades ago. The rules were simple: Christmas cards had to be mailed on December 1st, and whoever received theirs first had to report it immediately.

Over the years, this led to midnight mailbox drop-offs, USPS mishaps, dramatic winning streaks, and plenty of laughter. Life eventually paused the contest—but when it returned, it carried even more meaning than before. Proof that traditions grow richer with time.

✨ The Heart of It All

The moral of the story is simple:

Never miss an opportunity to celebrate Christmas by letting the people you like and love know you’re thinking of them.

As the year comes to a close, a simple card can carry warmth, comfort, and connection far beyond its envelope.

Christmas cards still matter—and always will.

With warmth and holiday cheer,

Why Afternoon Tea Service Is Not Inexpensive and Why It Is Worth Every Penny

Afternoon Tea is not a mass-produced or fast-food experience. It is a handcrafted, detail-rich tradition that requires both time and talent to create and maintain. Every element – from the delicate tea sandwiches and freshly baked scones to the finely tailored desserts and premium loose-leaf teas – is usually made in-house or curated with care, using quality ingredients that are neither cheap nor easily sourced.  These offerings are prepared daily, often in small batches (due to short shelf life), with artisanal touch that ensures freshness, flavor, and presentation.

Beyond the food and tea, afternoon tea service is an immersive experience. Each tea room wholeheartedly invests in creating an atmosphere that evokes grace, nostalgia, and refinement – think vintage linens, polished silver, bone china, fresh edible flowers, specialty items, curated music, and a lovingly set table.  Staff are trained not only in service specifics but in the art of hospitality, offering warm attentive care that makes guests feel welcomed and cherished.  Their knowledge of tea is shared and their hospitality is unsurpassed. This is a level of intentionality and service rarely found in other dining settings.

Furthermore, tea rooms cater to a niche clientele in often high-rent, high maintenance locations.  These businesses operate on paper thin margins and rely heavily on reservations to prepare just the right amount of food. No-shows, last minute cancellations, and haggling over price aren’t just harmless – they are deadly to a tea room because they chip away at the fragile financial balance required to keep these unique places alive and thriving.

Now before you go and dismiss these cold hard facts to suit your wallet, ask yourself how many times have you been shortchanged, undervalued, unappreciated and/or underpaid ? After giving your all only to find that no matter how hard you worked or even how much of your own money was added to make it perfect – you got the short end of the stick.  I know I have in order for it to be perfect. Creating this magic takes a lot of work. In other words, you get what you pay for. Forcing tea rooms to cut corners to cut costs is not fair to anyone, yet can sometimes be the case between staying in business or closing up shop.

In my travels to tea rooms here and abroad I can attest that each business was created with heart and soul to keep the beauty of the immersive experience alive for you to enjoy.  Attention to detail is fast becoming a lost art, but not in a real tea room and this is why I advocate for them.

In a world where people routinely pay premium prices for fast coffee, impersonal conveniences, or fleeting trends, the value of an afternoon tea – a memory-making, soul-feeding, unhurried escape – is undeniably rich. Tea rooms are a test of time, preserving the old-world elegance and offering something truly rare: the chance to experience yesteryear, while creating tomorrow’s traditions – today.

Support your local tea room! It is up to tea lovers everywhere  to uphold this unique gift in our lives. They are not just places to eat, they are places to cherish.
